Summary
“You disappeared,” Haru said flatly.
The accusation hung between them before he could take it back. Haru didn’t know whether he meant the first time Rin vanished to Australia, last night in Samezuka’s pool, or every other time in between. The ways he’d left brazenly, or silently, or maybe the sum of them all weighed against this moment.
Rin’s jaw shifted, the skin at his cheekbone going pale where he clenched it. He didn’t say anything for a long stretch, and Haru counted the seconds in his head—one for every week Rin had been gone, two for every time he’d waited in silence for a reply that never came. Finally, Rin let out a slow breath and dropped his shoulders. The tension that had braced his body for a fight loosened, and at last Haru saw him not as an opponent, but as someone who might also have been a little lost.
“I had to,” Rin finally whispered.
Or:
For years, the water has been the one place where Haru never had to question himself. But when Rin returns, old memories refuse to stay buried, and the feelings Haru has spent years keeping at arm's length become impossible to ignore.
