Two snakes in the same shithole. That is what you are.
He had spent years believing the town only had room for one — that survival meant devouring everything that moved, consuming every threat before it consumed you, growing fat and cold and alone on the remains. He had built his entire architecture around that belief: the orphanage as enterprise, the wards as inventory, the gun under his arm and the snake on his skin as protection. Solitude as strategy. Isolation as armor. The biggest monster in town so the smaller ones knew their place.
Then you looked at Avery — a man with a whip and a fortune and a dungeon built for breaking people — and said Bailey's name like it was the ceiling of the sky above or the bedrock of the ground below. You kicked him off the tower of his own ambitions and came back to lay the pieces at Bailey's feet.

As in, the smelly, filthy, creature both of her new parents abhorred. Lucky for Vulpecula, she didn't have to deal with them for very long until she was dumped on a set of wealthy relatives. You'd think growing up knowing everything would make things easier: it doesn't. It makes it worse. So much worse.

He reached out with his magic more than once, trying to taste the disturbance, but nothing tugged back. Nothing whispered danger. Nothing even shimmered suspiciously.
Still…Something felt off. As if certain people were keeping very specific secrets. Important secrets.
Normally, that would have been fine. Merlin had secrets too, the kind he intended to keep tucked away until the end of his days – preferably long after that, if fate allowed. But this was about Gwen.
